sholes

Christopher Latham Sholes, who lived in Milwaukee in the 19th Century when he developed the mechanical type system we now call the typewriter, was also known as a Wisconsin State Assembly person who championed the legislation that made Wisconsin the second state in the US to abolish the death penalty. He had been ill from tuberculosis for several years prior to his death in 1890, yet he continued to make refinements on the design of his typewriter which was being produced by the Remington Company, of rifle manufacturing fame.
